Task 3 - Development of Design

Further Exploration of my chair design

I decided to simplify and return to develop a design from abstract thinking inspired from the form of a cube.

Joints in relation to the spatial verb Notch and a cube

Cube with a notch (Wrapped for strength and unwrapped to expose inside)

Experimenting strength of construction

                 Compacts down

I found that it was extremely sturdy and this can be seen withstanding the weight of the heavy plant pot. It can also compact down which is an aspect I would really like to consider in my chair design.

Other Considerations with construction

Construction of Cardboard Prototype

                   First mockup                                                                            Second mockup

When building my test chair design, I constructed each half separately, one after the other, to see changes that would need to be made before making the second. These were the issues and differences. As you can see from the images above the one on the right is much more sturdy.

Folds down

What I found
- Very Sturdy (holds my weight)
- Can Fold down (meets my brief)
- The direction of top pieces corrugation affects the strength and reliability of the seat.
- Although the two pieces are kept separate when you sit down the force of the mass locks the top half into the V of the lower half.
- The back of the seat is at a 90deg angle to the seat. This brings discomfort and needs further development to meet the user needs.
- Mass is equally distributed across both pieces with the center of mass down the middle of the 'V'. This works because of its symmetrical shape.

Considering my Dimentions and Needs

This chair is to be deigned in relation to my needs. Therefore I have measured neserecry dimentions of myself to understand base the scale of my design of this findings.
